Also Available for BTH Magnetos, for motorcycles and cars
Suitable for most Classic British Bikes, 6 or 12 volts,
AJS Ariel BSA Matchless Norton Royal Enfield Triumph Velocette etc. etc. Singles, twins, Sq4.
Developed in house, the Thorspark is a simple and reliable electronic ignition conversion suitable for most classic British bikes fitted with Lucas magnetos.
This system replaces the magneto
entirely, but fits inside the magneto end cap. The magneto remains in
place, the original manual or automatic ignition advance continues to
function as before, and the electronic conversion is not visible so the
original appearance of the bike is maintained. The conversion comes in
6 or 12 volt options, and both positive or negative earth. Fitting is
simple, and setting the timing is easier and more accurate than for a
magneto.
This system gives a large spark at all engine speeds,
normally greatly improving starting and low speed running, as well as
throughout the rev range. Once fitted it is maintenance free.
...............................................
The conversion is based on a standard 6
or 12 volt ignition coil (single or twin cylinder) and an electronic
trigger unit that replaces the original points inside the magneto.
With this system the magneto remains in position maintaining the look
of authenticity of the bike, and it uses the original manual or
automatic advance system, but the magneto does not have to work. It is
solely used to trigger the ignition module. Fitting time is minutes
(there is no need to remove the magneto). The ignition timing will
then have to be set with a strobe light, taking an hour or so (if you
know the bike), this is
done by adjusting the electronic ignition unit and is straightforward
to do, there is no need to remove the magneto drive pinion or use rizlas.
The conversion normally transforms the starting and running of most
classic bikes! We have a Matchless G11 demonstration bike (fitted
with K2F magneto), visitors welcome (near Brighton in Sussex). The
photo shows the K2F kit (for Lucas K2F magneto as fitted to Triumph,
Norton, Matchless and most other British twins), we have off-the-shelf
kits for most other Lucas mags available (6 or 12 volt battery,
positive or negative earth), single cylinder, twins, and the square
Four.
The
system draws very little power (about 1/4 amp depending on engine
speed), and works well with the original 6 volt Lucas dynamos fitted to
most British bikes, as well as upgraded 12 volt electrics.
If your magneto is tired, faulty, full of oil, or is giving uneven ignition timing between cylinders, this is an ideal solution!
We have developed this product as we have had several magnetos re-wound over the years, and none has lasted more than a year.
Fitting
This is a simple matter of removing the magneto points unit and replacing with the electronic trigger unit. The ignition coil needs to be hidden somewhere on the bike (we suggest under the seat or tank) and connected to the trigger unit by two wires. Then the ignition timing needs to be re-set by strobe light, full step by step instructions are included with each kit. Wiring is simple with only three wires in total. The whole process takes less than an hour or two to complete and does not require the removal of the magneto.
Applications
Off the shelf kits available for most Lucas magnetos, including amoung others:
• Single cylinder mag dyno's with face cam points, M01
• Single cylinder mag dyno's with slip ring points, MO1, K1F
• Twin cylinder magnetos with slip ring points, K2F
• MN1E for square fours
• Single cylinder SR1, N1, etc
We can also adapt this electronic ignition system to fit virtually any magneto or points ignition system
Lucas or otherwise, please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Why Fit a Thorspark Electronic Ignition?
• This is a simple
system that produces a large and reliable spark, resulting in more
reliable starting, smoother tickover, more powerful running as well as
being virtually maintenance free.
• The unit is driven by the existing magneto so uses the original ignition advance mechanical or manual.
• The electronic unit is hidden inside the magneto end cap, so the bike looks original.
• Simple fitting and timing, there is no need to remove the mag or mag drive pinion, no messing around with rizlas.
• There
are various different options for different magnetos, and 6 or 12 volt
electrics, but none draw more than 1/4 amp in total, and the system works well
with the original 6 volt Lucas dynamo. The bike needs to have a battery
on it, but even if it stops charging the ignition draws little power
and a normal battery will give several hours of running with the lights
off. If your battery is not charging, you will not be able to run at
night anyway.
• Safe to well over 15000 rpm
This system will transform the starting, tickover, and running of most British bikes.
Price
If your magneto is giving you problems this is an alternative to a magneto rewind or magneto rebuild, or fully reconditioning your Lucas magneto. It has several obvious advantages over a Lucas magneto rewind or rebuild, apart from the cost. Maintenance and installation are both far simpler, with improved performance and starting, and a decent guarantee. The kit is a DIY fit yourself kit with step by step instructions. It is straightforward to do, although obviously some care is required. The ignition system runs off the bike's battery, so this will have to be charging if you are going to use the bike at night. However, the ignition system draws very little current, a total of about a quarter of an amp depending upon the model (a couple of watts approx), so the extra load on the battery is very small. Should the charging circuit fail, an hour of two on a battery charger will give many hours of running with the lights off. We have had several Lucas magneto rewinds done professionally in the past for various bikes, and none has lasted well. This is an alternative to a Lucas magneto rebuild or rewind.
